Bars and Cafes

Evening social life in Berberati centres on a handful of bars serving cold Castel or Mocaf beer, palm wine, and locally distilled spirits. The bars are simple — plastic tables, fluorescent lighting, music from a phone or small speaker — but they are where the city relaxes after dark. Conversation is the entertainment. French and Sango are the languages you'll hear; knowing a few words of Sango goes a long way.

There are no cafes in the European sense. Morning coffee is typically taken at home or from small street vendors selling instant coffee or café au lait from thermos flasks near the market.
