Eating Out

Eating out in Berberati is a simple affair. There are no restaurants in the Western sense — what exists is a handful of basic eating houses serving local food, a few small guesthouses with dining rooms, and street vendors around the central market. The food is straightforward Central African cooking: grilled or stewed meat (chicken, goat, and bush meat when available), plantain, cassava in various preparations, and rice. Portions are generous and prices are low by any standard.

The central market is the best place to find prepared food during the day. Women vendors sell grilled brochettes, fried plantain, and bowls of sauce with fufu or rice from charcoal braziers. Point at what looks good and eat where you stand — this is where the city eats lunch.
