When to Go

Berberati has an equatorial climate moderated by its position at the forest-savanna transition zone. There are two rainy seasons — a long one from roughly April to June and a shorter one in September to November — and two dry seasons, with the main dry period running from December to February. Temperatures are warm year-round, hovering between 20°C and 32°C, with humidity highest during the rains.

The best time to visit is the dry season from December to February. Roads are at their most passable — the route from Bangui is difficult enough without adding mud — and travel into the forest areas is feasible. The forest is beautiful in the dry season: less mosquito pressure, clearer tracks, and easier movement for wildlife watching.

The rains make travel genuinely hard. The unpaved roads to Berberati and the forest tracks to Bayanga and Dzanga-Sangha can become impassable for weeks at a time. If your main goal is reaching the Dzanga-Sangha Reserve, plan around the dry season. If you're already in Berberati or traveling through the southwest regardless, the rainy season has its own moody beauty — the forest is lush, waterfalls run full, and the city slows to a different pace.

Security conditions are unfortunately as important a factor as the weather when deciding when to travel in the CAR. Check current advisories before planning any visit.
