Berberati is a compact city by the standards of CAR's second city, and most things of interest are reachable on foot within the centre. The main market, the Catholic mission, the prefecture buildings, and the better-known guesthouses are all within walking distance of each other.
For trips further afield — to neighbourhoods on the city outskirts or to the road south toward the forest — motorcycle taxis (moto-taxis) are the standard local transport. Flag one down on any main road, agree on a price before you get on, and hold on. They are cheap, plentiful, and fast by local standards.
Hired vehicles with drivers can be arranged through the Catholic mission or through NGOs operating in the area, and are necessary for any serious journey out of town. There is no reliable public transport to Bayanga or the forest areas — you will need to hire a vehicle or find a truck going that way and negotiate a ride.
Roads within the city are mostly unpaved and pot-holed. In the rainy season, mud is a factor even in town.
