Chari River

The Chari River forms the border between Chad and Cameroon, and its banks on the N'Djamena side are one of the more pleasant places in the city. Fishermen work the shallows from pirogues — long, narrow wooden boats — in the early morning, and the opposite bank is Cameroon, with the town of Kousseri visible across the water. The border crossing here is one of the busiest in the region, and a steady procession of people and goods moves back and forth by boat.

Morning is the best time to walk the riverbank. The light is good, the temperature is bearable, and the fishing activity is at its peak. There is nothing organised here for visitors — no promenade, no cafe overlooking the water — just the river and its traffic. That is actually the point. The Chari at dawn, with the flat Sahelian landscape on both banks and pirogues moving slowly in the mist, is one of the more memorable sights N'Djamena has to offer.
