Grand Marché

The Grand Marché is N'Djamena's main market and one of the most vivid in Central Africa. It occupies several city blocks in the centre of town, organised loosely by trade — textiles here, leather goods there, spices and grains in one section, motorcycle parts and hardware in another. Live animals are sold in the outer areas. The whole enterprise is loud, crowded, and difficult to navigate by design; vendors have little interest in making it easy for you to move on.

An hour in the market is worth the effort. The textile section sells cloth from across the Sahel — Nigerian tie-dye, Chadian cotton prints, embroidered garments — at prices well below what you would pay further south. Leather goods are a particular strength: bags, sandals, and belts of good quality. Bring small notes for buying; larger denominations create complications. Keep valuables in a front pocket and stay alert, but don't let the standard caution get in the way of actually engaging with the place.
