Taposiris Magna

Ptolemaic temple and ancient town site west of Alexandria, overlooking Lake Mariout and the Mediterranean edge.

Taposiris Magna is an ancient town and temple site west of Alexandria, near Lake Mariout, with ruins that reach back to the Ptolemaic period. The surviving temple enclosure, pylons, and scattered remains do not have the completeness of Egypt's best-known sites, but they place Alexandria's Greek-Egyptian hinterland into the landscape in a way city museums cannot.

The site has gained popular attention from modern searches for Cleopatra-related burials, but it is worth treating more soberly as a layered archaeological stop. It works best as part of a western Alexandria or Lake Mariout excursion, especially for travellers interested in the region beyond the Corniche and central catacombs.
