Beaches

Alexandria's coastline stretches for miles along the Mediterranean, and beaches are central to the city's identity as Egypt's summer escape. The corniche offers a string of public beaches with full tourist facilities, from the city center outward.

Beyond Alexandria itself, fine beaches line the coast all the way to Mersa Matrouh, including the resort of Sidi Abd al-Rahman -- a secluded bay with clear waters and a handful of hotels and villas. At Mersa Matrouh, the natural bay and long white beach make for good swimming in calm, transparent water.

Abu Qir -- A small fishing town east of the city where you can sunbathe, fish, swim, and eat fresh seafood right on the beach. Abu Qir has an old-world feel: simple cafes, fish huts on the sand, and a pace of life that recalls an earlier Alexandria.

Agami -- A popular beach resort west of the city, favored by Alexandrians looking for cleaner sand and quieter stretches.

Aida Beach -- Located within the Montazah complex, Aida is considered one of the best beaches inside the city proper. You need a pass to enter (no tickets sold), which keeps the crowds manageable.

Hannoville -- Another beach resort west of Alexandria, quieter than Agami and less developed.
