Cairo's café culture — the ahwa — is as much a social institution as a place to drink. These traditional coffeehouses are everywhere, from neighbourhood dives to ornate historic establishments. Order a shisha, a glass of sweet tea, or thick Turkish coffee and settle in. Bars exist but are fewer; most are attached to hotels or concentrated in Zamalek and Downtown.
