Cairo is a serious shopping city. The Khan al-Khalili bazaar is the obvious starting point — it's been running since 1382 and sells everything from spices and gold jewellery to chess sets and hand-hammered copper. Bargain hard; halving the first asking price is standard practice. For something more contemporary, the fashion boutiques of Heliopolis offer a good window into modern Egyptian style.
