Getting Around

Cairo's traffic is legendary — driving yourself requires real nerve and isn't recommended for most visitors. The metro is a genuine pleasure: it's cheap, runs on time until midnight, and has a women-only first carriage. Taxis are everywhere; the meters are rarely used, so fix a price before you get in and keep small notes to pay with. Buses are packed and hard to navigate without Arabic, but cheap. For short hops in the centre, walking is often fastest.
