Historic Tahrir Square museum with mummies, ancient statuary, and artifacts spanning 5,000 years

The sandstone building on Tahrir Square housed Egypt's greatest treasures for over a century. Since the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza opened in 2024, the Tutankhamun collection — including the gold death mask — has moved there. The Tahrir building remains open and still holds an enormous collection: the royal mummies of Ramses II and Seti I, thousands of ancient statues, papyri, and everyday objects spanning from prehistoric times to the Roman period.

It is a worthwhile visit in its own right, particularly for the mummy room and the scale of the collections that didn't transfer to Giza. Budget two hours. For Tutankhamun specifically, make the trip to the Grand Egyptian Museum instead — see Day Trips.
