Just inland from the southern resort strip, Sand City is an outdoor park of large sand sculptures carved by international artists from compacted Saharan sand. The exhibition rotates over time but typically includes a giant sphinx, mythical creatures, scenes from Egyptian mythology and a few Disney-adjacent characters for the children. The detail in the larger pieces is genuinely impressive — some sculptures stand four metres high. Visit early in the morning before the worst of the heat; the park is open until late evening with floodlights.
