Getting Around

Safaga town is compact enough to walk across in twenty minutes. The main strip of hotels, restaurants, and dive operators runs along or just back from the waterfront, and most visitors spend the majority of their time within easy walking distance of wherever they're staying.

Taxis and tuk-tuks cover the short distances in town and the run up to Soma Bay (about 7 km north). Agree on the fare before departing. Most dive operators offer pickups from hotels as part of their packages.

Renting a bicycle is possible through some of the resort hotels and works well for the flat road between Safaga and Soma Bay. The road is narrow but traffic is light by Egyptian standards.

For day trips to Luxor (about 200 km west through the Eastern Desert), shared service taxis run from the main transport hub in town. The journey takes around three hours on a good run.
