Safaga's location on the Red Sea coast puts Luxor within striking distance — about 200 km west through the desert via the Sohag–Red Sea highway, a journey of roughly three hours. Day trips to Luxor from Safaga are genuinely worthwhile: you get Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and Hatshepsut's temple in a single long day. Start early.
