The Blue Desert is one of the stranger things in the Sinai. About 14 km outside the town of St. Catherine, in an otherwise unremarkable expanse of beige granite, scattered boulders have been painted a deep ultramarine blue. The contrast with the surrounding rock and sky is startling, especially when the light hits at low angles. Many visitors come at sunset for the photographs.
The site is easy to add to a St. Catherine's day trip; most local guides know it. There are no facilities — no signposts, no entry fee, nothing — so go with a driver who can find the access road off the main route. The paint has weathered substantially in forty years but is still strongly visible.
