Dungur Palace stands on the western edge of Axum, across the road from the Gudit Stelae Field. The ruins are the foundations and lowest courses of walls of a substantial structure β at its peak it covered roughly 3,250 square metres and included a central hall, multiple courtyards, and around fifty rooms. It was clearly the residence of someone very powerful.
Walking the site gives a clear sense of the floorplan despite the low walls: the layout is methodical, the stone work precise. A raised platform at the entrance would have supported a formal reception area. The Gudit Stelae Field behind the palace is less visited than the Northern Stelae Field but contains some striking fallen obelisks and is worth crossing the road to see.
