Presidential Palace

The Palais du Bord de Mer — the seaside palace — is the official residence and office of the President of Gabon. Commissioned by Omar Bongo, it sits on a prominent stretch of the Atlantic waterfront south of the city centre. The architecture is a late-modernist statement in stone and concrete, with vast forecourts and a complex of state reception halls.

You cannot enter. Even slowing down outside attracts attention, and pulling out a camera will get you stopped. The exterior is best appreciated from a passing taxi.

A story
Built by Omar Bongo in the late 1970s at a reported cost of around 800 million dollars, the seaside palace is one of Africa's most extravagant pieces of state architecture. Photography is forbidden; the gendarmerie is serious about it.
