All flights arrive at Banjul International Airport (BJL), located at Yundum about 24 kilometres from Banjul and close to the main coastal resort areas. Direct flights operate from several European cities including London, Brussels, and Amsterdam, mostly during the winter tourist season. The flight from London takes around six hours.
From within Africa, Air Senegal runs frequent flights between Dakar and Banjul -- the hop takes just 40 minutes. Other regional connections exist through Accra and Lagos.
At the airport, green tourist taxis are readily available. Expect to pay D500 to D800 for a ride to the main tourist areas. Most hotels and guesthouses also offer airport transfers if arranged in advance. Negotiate your fare before getting in.
Overland from Senegal
Many travellers combine The Gambia with Senegal. The most common overland route runs from Dakar south to the border, then onward to Banjul via the ferry from Barra. The Barra-Banjul ferry costs D25 per person and D800 per vehicle, and the crossing takes about 35 minutes. Ferries run regularly but can be delayed, so don't plan tight connections.
From the Casamance region in southern Senegal, you can cross into The Gambia at several border posts along the south bank. Bush taxis and sept-places (shared cars) run these routes regularly.
Border formalities
Expect to pay a $20 security fee when entering and departing The Gambia, payable in cash (US dollars or dalasi). Have your passport ready -- formalities are usually straightforward but can be slow.
