Ellis Hideout

Beach guesthouse and restaurant on the ocean side of the river

Ellis Hideout is the only place to eat — or sleep — on the beach side of the Butre River. A cluster of simple thatched bungalows and a sand-floor restaurant sit just behind the dunes, run by Ellis and his family for over two decades. The kitchen turns out fresh-caught fish, jollof rice, red-red (bean stew with fried plantain), and cold beer, all priced for backpacker budgets.

Order in advance — the cook starts whatever you ask for from scratch, and a fish lunch can take an hour. That hour passes well in a hammock with a Star beer, the surf twenty metres away. Most overland travellers between Takoradi and the western beaches end up here for at least a night.
