Getting There

Cape Coast lies on the main coastal highway between Accra and Takoradi, about 160 km west of the capital. The nearest international airport is Accra's Kotoka.

By bus from Accra — STC, VIP and Metro Mass run frequent air-conditioned services from Kaneshie or Circle stations in Accra to Cape Coast. Journey time is around three hours in good traffic, longer at weekends or holidays.

By tro-tro — Shared minibuses from Kaneshie in Accra are cheaper but slower and more cramped. They leave when full from early morning until late afternoon.

By car — A pleasant 3-hour drive along the N1 coastal road. The road is in reasonable shape but features the usual hazards: speed bumps, market towns, slow trucks. Most travellers hire a car with a driver for the day or longer.

Onward — Tro-tros and shared taxis run constantly to Elmina (15 km) and on to Takoradi (1.5 hours). For Kumasi, change at Cape Coast tro-tro station or take a long-distance bus.
