Fort William Lighthouse

19th-century lighthouse on Dawson's Hill above the old town

A working lighthouse perched on Dawson's Hill above the old town, on the site of the small Fort William built by the British in 1820 as a satellite of Cape Coast Castle. The current iron-framed lighthouse dates from 1923 and is one of the oldest still-active aids to navigation on the Gold Coast.

The walk up the hill takes about 15 minutes from the castle and is rewarded with the best view in town — Cape Coast Castle in the foreground, the fishing harbour and the Fosu Lagoon, the curve of the bay, and the surf rolling in. The keeper will sometimes let visitors climb the tower for a small tip.
