Founded by the Methodist Church in 1876, Mfantsipim is the oldest secondary school in Ghana and the alma mater of Kofi Annan and many other prominent Ghanaians. The hillside campus on the northern edge of town is a working boys' boarding school, but visitors are welcome on weekends and during holidays to walk the leafy grounds and see the colonial-era chapel and the older buildings around the quadrangle.
The view from the upper campus across to the castle and the sea is one of the best in town. The school museum (open by arrangement) has a small but interesting collection on the institution's role in 19th and 20th-century Ghanaian intellectual life.
