A shallow brackish lagoon at the western edge of Cape Coast, where the Kakum River meets the sea. The lagoon has been fished by the local Fante community for centuries, traditionally with handheld cast nets and by men wading from the shore. The annual fishing festival on the lagoon — held during the Fetu Afahye in early September — is one of the most colourful events in the local calendar.
The lagoon is best seen at low tide, when the fishermen wade out, and at dusk, when the silhouettes of the canoes against the western sky make for striking photographs. A short walk west of the castle along the shore brings you there.
