Aboakyere Festival

Annual deer-hunting festival, one of Ghana's most dramatic traditional events

The Aboakyere is held on the first Saturday in May and is the cultural high point of the Effutu year. Two rival asafo (warrior) companies, Tuafo and Dentsifo, race into the surrounding bush at dawn — one bushbuck must be captured alive and carried back through the streets to the chief's palace. The animal is then ritually sacrificed.

The town fills with visitors, drumming, and colour for the week around the festival. Even outside the chase itself, the procession through Winneba in traditional regalia, the chiefs' parade, and the public durbar at the palace are extraordinary. Book accommodation well in advance — every guesthouse in town is full from Friday through Sunday of the festival weekend.

A story
Two warrior companies — Tuafo (red) and Dentsifo (white) — race into the bush at dawn before the first Saturday in May. The first company to catch a live bushbuck with their bare hands carries it back through the town to present at the chief's feet. The ritual dates back several centuries to the Effutu people's migration from the Sahel.
