The main town beach runs east from the fishing harbour, a long sweep of fine pale sand backed by palms and a few simple beach bars. The Atlantic surf here is strong — fine for body-surfing but with serious rip currents, so swimming requires care.
In the early morning the beach is full of fishing crews launching long wooden canoes through the surf; by late afternoon they return and pull up on the sand, with the catch sold immediately on the beach. The dunes and shoreline are surprisingly clean for southern Ghana, and the lack of large hotels keeps it quiet.
