Winneba Fishing Harbour

Working harbour with painted wooden canoes and a busy morning fish market

The fishing harbour at the western end of town is the heart of Winneba's daily life. Long wooden Fanti and Effutu canoes — painted in bright reds, yellows, and greens, with proverbs and names along the bows — line the beach and the small concrete pier.

Mornings, between roughly 6 and 9, are when the boats return and the catch is auctioned on the sand. Tilapia, sea bream, snapper, and occasional small tuna change hands at high volume. It is one of the best, and least touristed, fishing-port scenes on the Ghanaian coast — ask before photographing crew or buyers, and be prepared for friendly conversation and persistent children.
