Getting Around

Abidjan is a sprawling city built around the Ébrié Lagoon, and getting between neighbourhoods requires planning. There is no metro; the main options are taxi, shared minibus (gbaka), and the lagoon ferries.

Taxi

Orange taxis are the most practical option for visitors. They operate as shared taxis on fixed routes (climb in and state your destination; the driver will add other passengers going the same way) or as private hire if you negotiate a fixed price before getting in. Agree the fare before setting off. Woro-woro are smaller coloured taxis that cover shorter routes within communes.

Gbaka (minibus)

Minibuses run fixed routes across the city at very low fares. They are crowded and do not follow strict schedules, but cover routes that taxis do not. Useful for getting between Plateau, Treichville, Adjamé, and Cocody.

Lagoon ferries (bateaux-bus)

The bateaux-bus ferry service crosses the lagoon between Plateau and Treichville, Marcory, and Locodjoro. The boats are inexpensive, run frequently during daytime hours, and give excellent views of the city skyline from the water. They are the quickest way to cross the lagoon if your destination is served.
