Fakobly

West Ivorian riverside village where Sassandra tributary wildlife meets Wobé dance traditions.

Fakobly is a small village 9 km from Tieni-Siabli and about 25 km from Man, in the far west of Ivory Coast. It lies on the banks of a tributary of the Sassandra River, where hippos and crocodiles can be spotted — you can hire a pirogue for a short trip on the water. The local Wobé women perform a traditional dance called the temate, though it is often hard to find out in advance when there will be a performance.

Getting There

Fakobly sits about 25 km from Man, the main city of western Ivory Coast and the logical base for exploring this region. The road from Man runs west through Tieni-Siabli; Fakobly is about 9 km from Tieni-Siabli.

Transport options are limited. Bush taxis run between Man and the western villages when they have enough passengers — you can find them at Man's gare routière. A private taxi or moto-taxi from Man is the more reliable option and gives you flexibility on timing. The roads are passable in the dry season; in the rainy season (June–October) conditions can deteriorate and some stretches become difficult.

Things to Do

Fakobly's appeal is quiet and specific: a river with large animals on it, and a traditional dance that surfaces on the right day. Neither requires much planning, but the pirogue trip should not be missed if you're in the area.
