The beaches between San-Pédro and the Liberian border grow progressively emptier and wilder the further you go. Plage de Grand, roughly 15km west of the city, is a broad stretch of Atlantic coast backed by forest — the kind of beach that takes some effort to reach but rewards that effort with near-total solitude. The surf here is stronger than at Bali Beach and not always safe for swimming, so read the conditions before wading in.
A 4WD or motorbike-taxi is the practical way to get here; the road deteriorates after the first few kilometres. Bring food and water as there are no vendors. The combination of empty beach, palm forest, and the sound of Atlantic swell makes this one of the better escapes in western Ivory Coast.
