Grand Marché

Busy city market for produce, fish, and everyday goods

San-Pédro's central market is a lively, all-purpose affair that serves the city's daily needs rather than tourist shopping. The fish section is the most interesting part — the port is close by, and the variety of catches on display reflects the richness of the Gulf of Guinea. Women in brightly coloured pagnes sell plantains, cassava, yams, tomatoes, and peppers from tables and ground cloths.

The market is busiest in the early morning, when the fishing boats have come in and the fresh catches are being sold. It quietens in the heat of the afternoon and picks up again in early evening. There's nothing here that caters to tourists, which is much of its charm — this is where the city feeds itself.
