Hell's Gate N.P.

Rift Valley national park of volcanic towers, gorges, geothermal steam, and rare walkable wildlife country.

Hell's Gate is a small national park near Lake Naivasha with some of the most dramatic geology in Kenya. Unlike most Kenyan parks, you can explore it on foot or by bicycle — there are few large predators here, which means you walk among zebra, giraffe, buffalo, and baboons without the barrier of a vehicle. It gives the place a genuinely different feel.

The main features are Fischer's Tower, a volcanic plug rising from the valley floor, the Central Tower at the far end of the park, and Hell's Gate Gorge — a narrow slot canyon with hot springs and obsidian caves. The Ol Karia Geothermal Station, with its steaming vents, adds to the otherworldly atmosphere. The park is also said to have inspired the landscape in Disney's The Lion King.

From Naivasha town, take a matatu toward the lake and get off at the signposted turn-off to Hell's Gate — it is about 2 km from there to Elsa Gate. Entry and camping fees are reasonable. Mountain bikes can be rented at Fisherman's Camp near the entrance. The walk from Elsa Gate to Central Tower and back is long, so consider camping overnight if you want to explore properly.
