Lake Bogoria is a shallow soda lake in the Rift Valley, north of Nakuru. When conditions at Lake Nakuru are not right for flamingos — which happens regularly — the birds move here instead, and the lake can turn pink with hundreds of thousands of lesser flamingos. Even without the flamingos, Lake Bogoria is worth the detour for its hot springs and geysers, which erupt along the western shore with impressive force.
The surrounding landscape is dry scrubland, so do not expect much in the way of wildlife beyond the flamingos and the occasional greater kudu. This is a national reserve rather than a full national park, with a modest entry fee.
To get here, take the B4 north from Nakuru towards Marigat. The turn-off to Loboi Gate is signposted about 2 km before Marigat, and it is roughly 20 km from there to the gate. You will need your own vehicle — no matatus run to the lake.
