Lake Nakuru National Park

Compact Rift Valley national park around a soda lake, known for flamingos and fenced rhino sanctuary.

Lake Nakuru is a shallow soda lake in Kenya's Rift Valley, famous for the vast flocks of flamingos that sometimes line its shores — at peak times, the lake can be ringed in pink. The national park surrounding it is compact but rich in wildlife, and it is one of Kenya's most visited parks.

Beyond the flamingos, Lake Nakuru is one of the best places in East Africa to see rhinoceros — both black and white rhino are present in the fenced sanctuary. The park also has buffalo, waterbuck, baboon, leopard, and lion. The landscape is a mix of open grassland, acacia woodland, and rocky escarpment along the eastern edge.

The park is just south of Nakuru town, about 160 km northwest of Nairobi on the main highway. You do not need your own vehicle — a taxi from Nakuru town can be hired for a few hours to drive you around the park.
