Riyadha Mosque

The Riyadha Mosque, at the southern end of the old town, is the most important Islamic religious centre in Lamu and one of the leading Sufi institutions in East Africa. It was founded in 1900 by Sheikh Habib Saleh and remains both a mosque and a madrasa, drawing students from across the western Indian Ocean.

Non-Muslims are not normally allowed inside the prayer hall, but the courtyard and the surrounding lanes are atmospheric and the annual Maulidi festival in the third Islamic month — a week of qaswida singing, processions, and dhow races — is the biggest event in the Lamu calendar and centres on this mosque.
