Dunga Beach is the main fishing beach on the Kisumu shore of Lake Victoria, a short boda boda ride south of the city centre. The beach itself is working rather than decorative — fishing boats pulled up on the sand, nets spread for drying, the smell of fresh catch — but that is precisely what makes it worth visiting. Early mornings are best, when the night fishermen return and the market is busy.
Boat trips out onto the lake can be organised from Dunga, either short trips along the shore or longer excursions to Ndere Island National Park, which sits just offshore and has hippos, crocodiles, and resident bird populations. The beach has a few simple restaurants serving fresh tilapia grilled over charcoal — the closest thing to a proper lakeside fish lunch in Kisumu.
