Kisumu is Kenya’s third largest city and the beating heart of the western region. It sits on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria, the world’s largest tropical lake, and carries a character all its own — hot and humid, unhurried, more reminiscent of coastal Mombasa than highland Nairobi.
The city centre is lively and walkable. The Kisumu Central Market near the bus stage is one of the best in western Kenya, where you can pick up soapstone carvings at prices far below what you’d pay in Nairobi. In the late afternoon, head to Hippo Point to watch the sun go down over the lake — the hippos are there if you look carefully, and the light on the water is hard to beat.
The Kisumu Museum is worth a few hours for its reconstructed Luo homestead and natural history of the lake. The Kisumu Impala Sanctuary on the lake shore is one of the few urban wildlife reserves in Africa. For the full lake experience, take a boda boda south to Dunga Beach for a morning fish market or an afternoon boat trip.
