Hippo Point is the standard sunset destination in Kisumu — a small promontory on the south side of the city where you can sit and watch the sun go down over Lake Victoria while hippos surface and submerge in the shallows below. The light on the water in the hour before sunset is genuinely beautiful, and on a clear day you can see across to the islands.
The hippos are not guaranteed but are usually there if you look carefully toward the reed beds. Boat trips out onto the lake can be arranged from here, and fishermen leave from the nearby beach in the early mornings with their catch arriving back mid-morning. It is worth timing a visit for either the morning fish activity or the evening sunset.
