Getting There

Lesotho is entirely surrounded by South Africa, so all entry comes through one of its roughly a dozen border crossings with South Africa — or by air into Moshoeshoe I International Airport outside Maseru.

By air. The main airport is Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU), about 18km south of Maseru. There are scheduled connections to Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo) and Cape Town. Alternatively, fly into Johannesburg and cross the border by road — this is what most visitors do.

By road. The busiest and most convenient crossing is Maseru Bridge (open 24 hours), which connects directly to the N8 toward Bloemfontein and Johannesburg. Ficksburg Bridge in the north is another popular option. For the most dramatic entry, the Sani Pass on the eastern side climbs 1,332 metres in 9 kilometres through the Drakensberg escarpment — extraordinary scenery, but a 4x4 is required and the crossing closes at 18:00.

Most Western passport holders (EU, UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada) can enter Lesotho visa-free for up to 14 to 30 days depending on nationality. EU citizens may stay up to 90 days. South Africans enter visa-free for 30 days. Nationals of other countries can apply for an e-Visa online through the official Lesotho e-Visa portal — approval typically takes 72 hours.

Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.
