When to Go

Lesotho's altitude means its seasons feel more extreme than neighbouring lowland countries.

Spring and autumn (March–May, September–November) are the best times for most visitors. Temperatures are comfortable, the light is clear, and the worst of both summer rains and winter cold is past. April is particularly good: the rains are ending, the grasslands are still green, and hiking and pony trekking conditions are ideal.

Summer (October–March) brings warm days but also afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the mountains. Rain can make highland tracks difficult or impassable. The landscape is lush and photogenic, but come prepared for sudden downpours and mist.

Winter (June–August) is cold and dry. The highland plateau gets heavy snow, and some passes close. But it's also cloudless, with excellent visibility, and if you want to ski at Afriski this is the only time to do it. Bring serious cold-weather gear — nights in the highlands can drop well below freezing.

Avoid the peak South African school holiday periods (December–January and July) if you prefer quiet — popular lodges and Sani Pass can get busy.
