Currency. The currency is the Lesotho Loti (LSL; plural Maloti). It is pegged 1:1 to the South African Rand, and Rand are widely accepted throughout the country. Change is given in Maloti, which cannot be exchanged outside Lesotho — spend or exchange any remaining Maloti before you leave. ATMs are available in Maseru and larger towns. In rural areas, cash is essential.
Language. The official languages are Sesotho and English. English is widely understood in towns and tourist areas.
Health. Lesotho has high rates of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Tap water in Maseru is generally treated, but bottled water is safer in rural areas. No vaccinations are required for entry, but routine vaccines should be up to date. Medical facilities outside Maseru are limited — comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
Safety. Petty theft and opportunistic crime occur in Maseru, particularly around the central market and at night. The countryside is generally safe. Avoid hiking alone in remote areas.
Climate and altitude. Lesotho sits entirely above 1,000 metres, with the highlands reaching above 3,000 metres. Even in summer, temperatures drop sharply at night. Pack layers regardless of the season. In winter (June–August), highland areas can receive heavy snow and some roads close.
Phone and internet. Vodacom and Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) provide mobile coverage. Signal is reasonable in the lowlands and major towns, patchy or absent in the highlands. Wi-Fi is available at most lodges and hotels.
Electricity. 220–240V, 50Hz. South African-style three-round-pin plugs are standard.
