Day Trips

Sapo National Park is one of the most important remaining areas of West African rainforest, home to pygmy hippos, forest elephants, chimpanzees, and hundreds of bird species. It is about 300 km from Monrovia — a long drive or a domestic flight to the nearest airstrip — making it more of a multi-day excursion than a day trip, but it is the single best reason to venture beyond the city.

Robertsport on the coast north of Monrovia has a beautiful lagoon, consistent surf that has attracted a small surfing community, and a slower pace entirely. It is about 160 km from Monrovia by road, manageable as a long day trip in the dry season.

Lake Piso, near Robertsport, is the largest lake in Liberia and an important wetland for migratory birds. The fishing communities around the lake are among the most traditional remaining in the Monrovia region.
