Almoravid Qubba

This small domed pavilion is the only surviving Almoravid structure in all of Marrakesh, dating to the 12th century when the dynasty founded the city. Originally an ablutions facility for a mosque that no longer exists, the qubba was buried under centuries of construction and only rediscovered in 1948. Despite its modest size, the carved stucco work inside the dome is extraordinary — floral motifs and geometric patterns that set the template for all Moroccan decorative architecture that followed. It sits just south of the Ben Youssef Madrasa and is easy to miss, but for anyone interested in Islamic architecture, this is where it all began in Marrakesh.
