Beira's neo-Manueline cathedral was completed in 1925 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. The walls incorporate stones quarried for the early sixteenth-century Portuguese fort of São Caetano at Sofala, sixty kilometres down the coast — making the building, in a strange way, four centuries older than its façade.
The exterior has the elaborate stonework typical of Portuguese ecclesiastical architecture, with a single square tower and a rose window. The interior is calmer, with painted blue and gold details on the vault. The cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Beira and remains the city's main Catholic church. Open during the day; modest dress expected.
