Beira is flat, hot, and spread out. Distances within the city are larger than the map suggests; the old centre and the Macuti beach are several kilometres apart.
Taxis are the usual way of getting around. The cars are unmetered — agree the fare before you start. Short hops in the centre run 100–200 meticais; longer trips between centre and the Macuti area or the airport are 300–500. Drivers gather at the railway station, the airport, and outside hotels.
Chapas (shared minibuses) run all the main routes and cost a few meticais. They are crammed, fast, and standard for local people but uncomfortable with luggage. Useful for the journey down the Macuti beach road.
Walking is fine in the centre during cool hours; avoid in the heat of midday. Walking at night is not safe — take a taxi after dark, even for short distances.
