When to Go

The dry season, May through October, is the best time to visit. Daytime temperatures are pleasant (25–30°C), humidity is manageable, and rain is rare. Nights are cool, particularly in June and July. This is also the best period for travel inland to Gorongosa National Park and along the road network generally.

The wet season, November through April, brings hot, humid weather and heavy afternoon rains. February and March are the peak of the cyclone season — Beira is one of the most cyclone-exposed cities in southern Africa. Cyclone Idai in March 2019 caused enormous damage and the city's infrastructure is still recovering. Watch the forecasts carefully if you travel during this period.

The dry season is also the cooler period, and the only time it makes sense to spend time outdoors on the beach or in the markets without serious heat protection.
