Mercado Maquinino

Beira's main street market — produce, fish, fabric, and household goods

Beira's central market sprawls over several blocks in the Maquinino district, between the colonial centre and the residential areas to the east. Fresh fish from the night's catch, cassava and matapa leaves, capulana cloth in stacks, plastic buckets, secondhand clothes — the standard repertoire of a Mozambican market, on a busy scale.

Mornings are the best time to come. Watch your bag and avoid the back streets at the edges of the market, particularly when carrying camera or phone. Bargain on cloth and household goods but pay the asking price on food, which is genuinely cheap.
