Hong

Small Adamawa plateau town near the Mandara Mountains, known for the granite formations of the Hong Hills.

Hong is a small town in Adamawa State, northeast Nigeria, roughly 120 km north of Yola. It sits on a plateau at the edge of the Mandara Mountains, surrounded by rocky hills and farmland, and serves as the headquarters of Hong Local Government Area.

The town is known for its striking granite inselbergs — the Hong Hills, massive rounded rock formations that rise abruptly from the surrounding plains. The hills offer good hiking and panoramic views across the savanna toward Cameroon. The area is home to the Kilba people, who have a rich tradition of weaving and metalwork; both turn up at the periodic market.

Hong is reached by road from Yola, a journey of about two to three hours depending on road conditions. Public transport runs along the route in the form of minibuses and shared taxis. Facilities in town are basic — a small market, a few provisions shops, and simple eateries. Visitors are rare, and you will likely attract friendly curiosity. The security situation in northeast Nigeria should be checked carefully before travelling, as conditions can change rapidly in this part of the country.

Things to Do

Hong is a small town in northeast Nigeria and sees very few foreign visitors. The main draw is the surrounding landscape — the Hong Hills and the granite inselbergs that rise from the Mandara foothills. For those passing through or making a deliberate detour from Yola, there are genuine things to see, though facilities are basic and prior research on the security situation is essential.
