Mubi

Adamawa commercial city near the Cameroon border, set below the Mandara Mountains.

Mubi is the second largest city in Adamawa State, northeast Nigeria, sitting close to the Cameroon border at the foot of the Mandara Mountains. It is a busy commercial centre and one of the main crossing points into Cameroon, which gives it an energy and diversity that belies its modest size.

The city's large daily market is the main draw for the surrounding region, attracting traders from both sides of the border. You will find everything from livestock and grain to textiles and electronics. The Mandara Mountains, rising to the east, offer dramatic scenery — terraced hillsides, traditional hilltop villages of the Higi and Marghi peoples, and a rugged landscape that rewards exploration on foot.

Mubi is reached by road from Yola, about three to four hours to the south, or via the border crossing from Cameroon. The road from Yola passes through rolling savanna and is generally in reasonable condition. The city has basic facilities including banks, fuel stations, and simple restaurants. As with all of northeast Nigeria, it is essential to check the current security situation before travelling — the region has experienced instability, and conditions can change rapidly.

Getting There

Mubi sits on the A13 road, about three to four hours north of Yola and roughly six hours south of Maiduguri. Shared taxis and minibuses run the routes daily from both directions. The road from Yola is paved and in reasonable condition; the route from Maiduguri passes through more sensitive areas and should be checked before travel. The Cameroon border crossing east of town is open to overland travellers but conditions and paperwork requirements change — make local enquiries the day before crossing.

Things to Do

Mubi is not a tourist town in any formal sense, but the combination of border-town energy, the daily market, and the Mandara Mountains rising to the east give it plenty for a curious traveller with a day or two to spare. Check the current security situation before travelling — the northeast has experienced sustained instability.
