Thiossane

Youssou N'Dour's Dakar club, still the city's most famous live music venue

Thiossane is the club Youssou N'Dour built in the 1980s and still owns — a low-ceilinged, packed live-music venue in the Sicap-Liberté district that runs late, sweats hard, and books the best mbalax bands in the country. N'Dour himself still plays here, irregularly and usually unannounced; when he does, the queue stretches around the block.

On nights without the boss, the residency falls to a rotation of Senegal's senior musicians and rising bandleaders, and the dance floor is still rammed. Things really get going after 1am. Cover charge is modest; drinks are not cheap by local standards but reasonable by European ones. Dress code is sharp.
